DOES YOUR AIRLINE SEAT MAKE YOU ANXIOUS? THERE’S A REASON WHY.

You’re buckled in, the doors are closed, and somewhere between 25% and 40% of your fellow passengers are quietly terrified. They just aren’t saying anything.

Fear of flying is one of the most common anxiety triggers in the world — and one of the least talked about. In Episode 25 of Translate This!, host Melissa takes the conversation up to altitude, exploring the data, the psychology, and the cultural dimensions of aerophobia that rarely make it into the mainstream conversation.

According to IATA, around 20% of travelers experience some degree of fear, with 4% experiencing a full phobia that makes flying feel unbearable. Other studies put general flight anxiety closer to 40% of the global flying population. In the U.S. alone, an estimated 25 million adults struggle with it. And yet air travel has never been statistically safer — with just 7 fatal accidents across more than 40 million global flights in 2024.

So why does the fear persist? And why does it look so different depending on where you’re from?

This episode explores:
Global statistics on flight anxiety and aerophobia — who’s most affected and why
The psychology of why flying triggers fear even when the data says it shouldn’t
How cultural differences shape the experience of flying anxiety — from personal space expectations to how distress is expressed onboard

Whether business and first class genuinely reduce anxiety — or just provide more comfortable dread
Celebrities who won’t fly — from Sean Bean and Megan Fox to Aretha Franklin — and what their stories reveal
What actually works: CBT, exposure therapy, virtual reality, and beyond
